Course Leader Adam Comiskey Interview
What are the film festival showings and awards that students from the course have won?
Each year our students attain success at most of the festivals and competitions both nationally and internationally. Due to our focus on strong traditional techniques and powerful storytelling, we expect to enjoy continued success long into the future.
What is your background/ industry experience?
Having studied traditional drawn animation, I decided to transfer my skills into the digital realm and sought work as an animator in the computer games industry. I then moved into special FX in the film industry working within Pinewood Studios and Soho. I then spent the next few years switching back and forth from film to games depending on which project sounded the most interesting.
Have you won awards/recognition for your work?
Yes. I have enjoyed a great deal of festival success both at home and abroad; and hope to do so again with future short animated films. All the staff on the course are active film makers, it's a great atmosphere.
Will I need to bring a portfolio and what should be in it?
Absolutely. All successful applicants will have strong drawing portfolios. We are looking for signs of hard work and dedication to the arts. Good observation skills demonstrated in plenty of strong life studies.
What equipment/facilities will I use on the course?
All students regardless of their intended area of study will spend their entire first year fine tuning their ability to drawn and animated with traditional media. All the basic principles of animation are covered. Only then do they progress in the second year to their specialised areas such as CG, 2D or puppet. In the final year they make a film using everything they have learned. We use industry standard software.
What about work experience?
We have a great deal of very talented part time staff that split their time with us and their work in industry. It's this unique relationship that gives our students a valuable gateway into the industry.
Are former students working in the field now?
Our top students very quickly settle into high profile jobs in the industry.
