Academic English Workshop

The workshops are an opportunity to practise using English in contexts related to your studies. You will practise listening to lectures and making notes, making presentations, reading academic texts and writing formal English. This means that all four main areas of language are covered: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Who takes part?

All postgraduate non-native speakers of English will be timetabled for the advanced level sessions unless they are specifically told that they do not need to attend by their course leader or by the University's languages staff.

Undergraduate and those on HND courses will be given a diagnostic test at induction; those whose score shows that they would benefit from AEW will be specifically told to attend.

Course leaders, level tutors and subject tutors may also tell students that they should attend, and students can join in as volunteers.

If students prefer they can take a full EFL course in the Centre for Languages and European Studies in place of doing an AEW. They can also do such a course in addition to the AEW.

How much time and effort are involved?

The programme lasts for 26 weeks.

There is one one-hour class per week. Each session will cover one academic writing topic and one academic skills topic. Generally the academic writing topic in alternate weeks will be "matters arising" from students' work. The programme is flexible, and students and tutors can suggest topics that need attention.

Students will have additional contact with tutors at other times when they:
- give a practice presentation;
- get feedback on their written work;
- get advice about their work.
